About Us
Why We Started
We never liked the idea of relying on a clothes dryer. They’re noisy, chew through power, and heating is one of the biggest costs in any Kiwi household. Living in the country with regular power cuts, we wanted to be more self-sustainable and less dependent on the grid.
So we started with what seemed like the obvious choice: an outdoor washing line right by the laundry. Handy in theory, but the reality was constant frustration.
- Rain clouds meant rushing out to pull everything down, then waiting and re-hanging it again.
- Wind blew clothes off.
- Birds left their mark.
- The sun bleached colours and weakened lines until they snapped.
It wasn’t the solution we hoped for.
An Idea From Above
Our home had elevated ceilings and unused warm airspace. Next to the laundry was a kids’ lounge — central, sunny, and perfect for an indoor drying solution.
We researched ceiling-mounted racks but couldn’t find one large enough for a family load or full sheets. Every commercial version used dowels, which meant draping clothes instead of pegging them properly. Airflow was poor, and clothes took longer to dry.
So we built our own.
Designing SkyDry
We created a full-sized indoor clothesline, using proper clothesline wire to work with standard pegs, so clothes could hang full-length and dry quickly.
The challenge was lifting the weight of a full load of wet washing. Our solution was a block-and-tackle pulley system that made it effortless, even the kids could raise it safely.
The very first SkyDry was made from light, straight-grained swamp kauri from an uncle’s farm in Dargaville. It worked better than we ever imagined. Washing dried in under an hour on a sunny day, and even in the middle of winter a load was dry by the next day, often overnight.
Laundry stopped being a chore and became something that just worked.
From Our Family to Yours
We realised we weren’t the only ones with this problem. That’s when SkyDry was born.
Now, every home can have a ceiling-mounted drying rack that:
- Saves money by cutting out dryer costs.
- Saves space by lifting laundry off the floor and walls.
- Saves the environment by reducing power use and clothing waste.
- Makes life simpler, cleaner, and more sustainable.
From our family to yours. Welcome to a smarter way of drying.
